What motivated you to run for the North Dakota Legislature? (100 words max)
Observing the past session and seeing extreme rhetoric preventing forward movement on solutions that should benefit the majority. I was frustrated with what our leaders were spending their time and energy on and decided I want to be a voice making changes to benefit our state.
What personal, professional, or community experiences have best prepared you to serve as a State Legislator? (100 words max)
I have lived in the Fargo community since graduating from NDSU. I have the same concerns of many of my fellow district community members - affordability of housing and daycare, general cost of living outpacing wages and concerns over the demand for mental health services and lack of resources. My 30 years working at Gate City Bank have taught me leadership skills and have allowed me to get involved with several organizations that are near and dear to my heart, including the Alzheimer's Association, where I serve on the Board of Directors for the ND-MN Chapter. I am a graduate of the FMWF Chamber Leadership Program, which gave me insight into our great community, including local resources and businesses that support our city and need our support in return.
If elected, what would be your top three priorities for the State of North Dakota, and why? (100 words max)
Affordable housing and childcare - housing shortages and childcare gaps are major issues for working families in ND.
Support strong public schools by addressing teacher shortages, cuts to school programs and taking opportunities away from our children.
Protecting resources for vulnerable communities - the rural and elderly population, homeless and community members dealing with addiction and the mental health crisis
Looking ahead five years, what do you see as the most significant opportunities and challenges facing North Dakota? (100 words max)
The biggest opportunity is our energy growth, which will drive tax revenue, jobs and long term economic stability.
Our biggest challenge is our housing affordability and availability - which directly impacts workforce recruitment and growth.
Do you support the use of state funding for programs and initiatives aimed at attracting, developing, and retaining talent throughout North Dakota? Please explain. (100 words max)
I support using state funds to support talent growth in ND. Bringing new talent and developing our workforce will only strengthen our state and help to fill gaps that are currently growing larger - specifically in education, healthcare and manufacturing. Incentives and programs also help ND stay competitive in recruiting new talent to our great state.
Do you support the use of state funding for economic development, such as incentives, tax credits, and other programs to support business retention, attraction and expansion? Please explain. (100 words max)
Yes, I support state funding for economic development, which can will diversify the economy and help attract new industries, which in turn brings new workforce and talents to ND. New businesses mean more jobs, more income and tax revenue. This investment will pay for itself over time.
In 2023, F-M Metro COG conducted a study of the metro area’s housing market that identified the need for 16,400 housing units across the region by 2033. What policies or tools can the Legislature use to support the development of attainable, market-rate housing in Cass County and across North Dakota? (100 words max)
The ND Legislature can provide low-interest rate loan programs to make housing more affordable and allow residents to build equity in their homes. Property tax exemptions or reductions can also be offered to the appropriate audience to make housing or projects financially feasible. The State can also provide grants to help with developer infrastructures, such as water and sewer extensions, stormwater systems and street improvements and development.
Access to quality childcare continues to be a major concern for families and employers across the state. If elected, how would you work to expand access to affordable, high-quality childcare in North Dakota? Please explain. (100 words max)
I would look at both short term and long term goals regarding childcare - currently parents are struggling to pay more and providers can't charge less. The State can help close that gap so both parties can succeed in the short term - through grants or supplemental funding. Long term, childcare needs must be considered when planning for growth. State funding should be used to support new centers and daycare providers, invest in better pay and training, which will in turn set up families to stay in the workforce and provide childcare workers with a decent living wage.
Do you support the development of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project? Please explain. (100 words max)
Yes, I support the RRV Water Supply Project. Being that the RRV is drought prone, this protects our families, farms and businesses if we experienced a drought. It ensures clean and reliable water for the future. Without the insurance that the Water Supply Project provides, our manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare could be at serious risk if our waters run low.
Do you support the development of a Natural Gas Pipeline to Eastern North Dakota? Please explain. (100 words max)
Yes, I support the development of a Natural Gas Pipeline to East ND. I believe it can benefit the east side of the state and provide lower energy costs for businesses and homes. I am in favor of keeping more of our natural gas in the state rather than exporting it - this not only reduces waste, but supports long-term energy development.
