Lynn Halmrast
Minnesota state House of Representatives candidate
Party: Republican
District #4A
I am a longtime resident of Moorhead and a crew member of the Hjemkomst Viking ship. I worked with Moorhead public schools as a psychologist and educator for 33 years. I also served as president of Education Moorhead, our teachers union. I am a licensed psychologist and an LMFT (Emeritus) and have my own private psychological consulting business. My interest in mental health and prevention of mental illness led me to employment with Clay County Public Health. During my career with Public Health, I became an Internationally Certified Prevention Specialist equipping me in mental illness and substance abuse prevention. Since retirement from Public health, I have emphasized additional training in suicide prevention and prevention of child sexual abuse, along with training in violence and crises prevention and trauma treatment. I believe I have the skills, knowledge and unique experience to deal with the challenges we as citizens face today. My leadership experiences throughout my career have made me a proven leader and a compassionate problem solver.

Q&A with Lynn:
-
I am concerned about the high cost of living and inflation that have crushed Minnesota Families. We have just experienced the most violent year in the last 2 decades here in Minnesota, as a father and grandfather I fear for the future and want to work to make it better. I believe in a safe and prosperous Minnesota in which we can feel comfortable in our streets and cities, while having a competitive business environment.

I have served as the president of the Moorhead teachers union, served on multiple leadership councils, and have acted as a policy advisor in the past. As a mental health professional I am uniquely qualified to handle the challenges we face in 2022. My background as a drug addiction counselor has given me the skills to deal with the opioid epidemic we face today, a crisis affecting all of us in greater Minnesota.

As a legislator I will work to make Moorhead a more competitive and safe city. Minnesota businesses are punished by over regulation and centralized control from St Paul. I will prioritize expedient approvals of permits and on changing the tax structure to support Minnesota's local businesses.

Minnesota is the fifth highest taxed state for personal income. As long as we have such high taxes Minnesota will continue to drive away workers.
I also will support trade schools and 2 year post secondary education options. A labor shortage may be the biggest issue the construction industry faces today and I believe that a prioritization of trade schools will help increase the number of new workers.

I will work to simplify the regulatory burden Minnesota builders face by streamlining the permitting process and by increasing industry feedback in the building code.
