Scott Kostohryz

Moorhead School Board Candidate

I am a father of three, two of whom are currently Spuds and one attending the US Naval Academy. I have been married for almost 22 years to my wife, Heather, and we have lived in Moorhead since 2004. I have been a police officer for 22 years, working the past 18 in Moorhead. I currently work as a patrol sergeant (since 2012) and supervise the School Resource Officers, among many other duties. I have served on numerous local, state and national boards.

Q&A with Scott:

  • Public service has been something I have believed in as long as I can remember. I feel that living in Moorhead for almost two decades has given me the background and pride needed to serve in a local government position. I have worked closely with Moorhead Schools in my career and feel like I am comfortable and familiar enough with the administration and employees to make well informed policy decision.

  • I have served on several non-profit boards. In each case, I have served in a leadership position. I have received training on emergency management and school safety and would make those my priority if elected. My experience as a parent of children in this district also provides me with a necessary perspective. Lastly, I am currently the executive director of the Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League. This non-profit has a focus of working with at-risk and disadvantaged youth. Through my contacts with this program, I am familiar with many resources and programs that youth in our district rely on.

  • I strongly feel that nation-wide, the school board position has become overly politicized. I would like to put the focus back on the students and staff and keep political theater out of the board room.

  • I see two big challenges looming for Moorhead Schools. Student and staff safety as well as continued district growth. I feel the district has excelled at facilities, but has work to do on the safety side of things. This is no small task and something the district will need experienced voices for.

  • I would like to continue the tradition of excellence in Moorhead Schools and do everything possible to increase graduation rates and improve school security.
